Dr. Bernard Cohen is Professor and Deputy Chairperson of the department and is on staff at C.U.N.Y. Graduate Center's Ph.D. program in Criminal Justice. Dr. Cohen was Director of Police Personnel Research at the Rand Corporation and served as an expert witness on litigation involving police misconduct, discipline and litigation. He has also served as an expert witness to the U.S. Equal Opportunity Commission on litigation involving police personnel matters. Currently, Dr. Cohen is conducting a research project on how the police manage street deviance in New York City and Los Angeles. Dr. Cohen was the criminology book review editor for the Journal of Criminal Law, Criminology and Police Science.

Dr. Cohen's major research interests include: police selection, performance, and evaluation; field studies of police and quality of life offenses; criminological theory; political criminology; and gang violence.
