With great pleasure, our committee chose James French as the first recipient of the Charles Smith Award and his contribution will be recognized at the department honors dinner. His amazing paper supervised by Lauren Seiler focused on post and trans-human society. The three other papers by Ruqayyah Abdullah and Asher Ross (on sexual behavior and body weight); Susan Sepe (on aging and foster care); and Danielle Wittman (an ethnographic study of a local Long Island coffee shop, referred to as “The Cup,) all deserve “honorable mention” due to their excellence.

We thank and honor Professors Turner, Seiler, Lewis, and Newmahr, for nominating the foregoing papers and for their superb mentorship.

Thanks to Robin Rogers-Dillon, Lauren Seiler, and Staci Newmahr, members of the award committee.
